It was the winter of 1972. Donny Osmond’s Puppy Love was on the airwaves, Gough Whitlam was soon to be PM and Victorians were about to be introduced to a new form of exciting entertainment – TattsLotto!
Today marks a special occasion in Australian lottery history as we celebrate 50 years since the very first TattsLotto draw.
Hosted by David Johnston and Lucy Kiraly, the draw first aired on HSV7 Melbourne on 22 June 1972 – a Thursday night before it moved to its Saturday slot.
The division one prize was $50,535 - almost enough to buy a new house in Toorak at the time!
By the ‘80s, the Australian Lottery Bloc syndicated the game to other Australian states where it was known as Gold Lotto in Queensland, X Lotto in South Australia and Lotto in NSW.
After half a century of exciting draws, TattsLotto has earned its reputation as an Australian favourite and a game renowned for making millionaires. So far in 2022, there’s been 89 millionaires made Australia wide.
We can’t wait to see what the next 50 years brings.
